Suspension: noises, causes and what to check
The suspension works constantly and takes the biggest loads. Clunks or vibrations are signs of wear — not “normal sounds”.
Common noise sources
- Bushings (control arms, stabilizer)
- Tie rods and steering components
- Shocks and top mounts
- Wheel bearings
- Stabilizer links
Tip: note when the noise appears (braking, turning, bumps)
to narrow down the source.
When noises appear
- Over bumps or rough roads
- At low speeds (parking)
- During turns or braking
- More when cold
First checks
- Visual inspection (cracks, rust, play)
- Pry-bar checks for bushings
- Wheel play tests
- Shock leaks and top mounts
Why delaying is costly
- Reduced safety and handling
- One worn part damages others
- Repairs get more expensive
