What should you check on the battery before cold weather?

Slow cranking, dim lights and the age of the battery are signs that the system deserves a check before winter.

A battery often gives warning signs before it fails completely. If the engine cranks more slowly, the interior lights dim or the car feels reluctant to start after standing, it is worth dealing with before the first freezing mornings arrive.

Cold weather reduces battery performance exactly when the engine needs more power to start. That is why a battery that still seems acceptable in autumn can let you down on the first serious winter morning.

A practical check includes the battery age, the cleanliness of the terminals and whether the charging system is working correctly. Sometimes the problem is not the battery itself, but the alternator output or poor connections.

If the battery gets replaced, record it in the service history with the date and mileage. It is one of those details that becomes surprisingly useful later.
